Frequently asked questions

What are venting hobs?

Venting hobs are hobs with a built-in extraction system that removes steam, smoke, and cooking odours directly from the hob surface while you cook. This eliminates the need for a separate overhead extractor hood, combining cooking and ventilation in one appliance.

Venting hobs are the ideal choice for:

• Compact kitchens where over-cooker space is limited
• Kitchens where you want to maintain a minimalistic, sleek visual design

How do venting hobs work?

Venting hobs function like a standard hob but, as the name implies they also include an integrated extractor.

1. A built-in extractor draws in air, steam, and grease particles from the cooking surface.
2. The venting hobs filtration system cleans the air, either through specially designed filters to remove grease and odours.
3. While you can manually select the venting level, some models automatically adjust the speed based on how much steam it detects.

Some hobs utilise a stationary air vent extractor which is typically flat or flush with the hob surface. Others include retractable, vertical extraction fans which can be raised when required, and then lowered back to within the main unit when no longer needed.

As with traditional extraction, they do require regular cleaning or replacement of the filters.

Are venting hobs effective?

Yes, because venting hobs remove odours and steam right at the source, they can be just as effective or even more effective than an overhead extractor fan!

The key benefits of a venting hob are:

• The efficient odour removal, as it captures steam and odours immediately before they have the chance to spread through the kitchen.
• Their space-saving design, as they free up wall space that would otherwise have to be taken up by a bulky extractor fan.
• The sleek aesthetics of the venting hob are an appeal for many, as they blend right into the hob and oven for a seamless and modern kitchen design.

Can you have drawers under a venting hob?

Yes, you can have drawers under a venting hob. However, you must account for the space and depth required for retraction and housing (if applicable) of the extraction fan when not in use, and components such as the ducting and motor.. They typically take up the space of one slim drawer, so think of it like losing a cutlery drawer under your hob. However, you can have drawers shaped around these minimising any impacts and retaining maximising storage potential.

Where do venting hobs extract to?

Venting hobs work by drawing in steam and smoke into the extractor. This air then passes through a grease filter to capture oil particles, and a carbon filter to remove odours.
The clean air then travels down the back of the cabinet and through a vent in the base, to circulate the air back into the kitchen. This makes them a great choice for kitchens without huge amounts of space and avoids the need for major modifications to your home.
There are also venting hobs that offer ducted extraction, where extracted air is pumped through vents outside after being passed through grease filters. However, these are less common, due to the extensive modifications to the home and professional installation that they require.

Are venting hobs noisy?

Smeg’s venting hobs are specially designed to be powerful, yet quiet, providing top-tier performance without interrupting your cooking. Smeg venting hobs operate at 50 - 70 decibels (dB) reaching a maximum of 68 dB in normal use and 73 dB when using the booster function. This maximum dB is equivalent to your typical extractor fan when operating at high speeds.
